Nintendo 3DS release date and price announced, universal friend codes confirmed

Nintendo held a press conference at New York and in Europe today to finally reveal the price and and release date for the Nintendo 3DS in North America. As revealed at the event, the 3DS will retail for $249.99 and arrives in stores March 27, over a month after the Japanese release. The glasses-free 3D handheld will come in two colors over in the states, Cosmo Black and Aqua Blue.

Not much else of note was discussed at the event, except for this one small thing: the Nintendo 3DS will have universal friend codes! That’s right — no more entering in unique friend codes for every single game you’d like to play your friends online with. In addition to that wonderful bit of news, you won’t even have to exchange friend codes with other users on the same wireless network.

Thanks, Joystiq.
