Nintendo held a press conference last night in Japan to announce not only the release date for the Nintendo 3DS, but also a number of new features and services to be coming to Nintendo’s next handheld. Oh, and of course new games were announced, too.
First up is the news that you’re probably here for: the release date. Nintendo announced that the Nintendo 3DS will be launching in Japan sometime in February 2011 for ¥25,000, which is roughly $300. Nintendo stated that North America and Europe will be getting it a month later in March of 2011, but Nintendo has so far made no mention of pricing for the regions (source: GoNintendo via Destructoid).
Also coming out of Nintendo’s press conference are the specs, which I’ll run down briefly here. The 3DS features three cameras (one on the inside and two on the outside), a built-in microphone, a movement sensor, gyro sensor, slide pad (the analogue stick), 3D volume slider (to adjust the intensity of the 3D effect), home button, wireless button (to turn wireless functionality on and off), and finally 2.4 GHz wireless functionality, able to communicate with other 3DS’ or connect to a wireless access point (compatible with WPA/WPA2 IEEE802.11 security). To check out the full specs, check out this post on Andriasang here.
Nintendo also revealed new features and services for the 3DS. The first is, surprise!, Miis for your 3DS. You’re able to use the 3DS’ camera to take a snapshot of your face, which the 3DS will then translate into a virtual Mii representation of you. You can, of course, go and adjust it to fit your liking after the 3DS generates your Mii. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata also revealed that the 3DS will be getting something akin to the Virtual Console on the Wii, but for GameBoy and GameBoy Advance games.
Last but not least are the games. Capcom came out to the event to announce two new games for the Nintendo 3DS, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries — not to be confused with the other 3DS Resident Evil game, Revelations — and Mega Man Legends 3 Project. Nintendo also showed a nifty Nintendo 3DS software montage at the event, which you can find below. Sadly, it doesn’t include Mega Man Legends 3 Project footage.
