Champions Online going free-to-play later this month

Cryptic announced they would be jumping aboard the free-to-play train several months back, and now we have word on just when that will be. Atari and Cryptic let users know on the official Champions Online website that the costumed MMORPG will be going free-to-play this coming January 25.

With this transition into the free-to-play model comes the addition of a new subtitle, making the new name Champions Online: Free For All. As reported back in October, the playerbase will be split between Silver and Gold subscribers. Silver is, of course, the free-to-play option and allows for most everything that Gold players have, but with some restrictions attached.

For instance, Silver members will be limited to only two character slots with the option to purchase more on the C-Store. Gold members will get access to content such as Special Archetypes and Adventure Packs for free, while Silver members have to fork over the cash over on the C-Store to get access to them.

If you’d like to be one of those privileged Gold members, you’ll have to hand over $14.99 per month over to Cryptic and Atari. If you’d like the full list of perks for the Gold option, head on over to Cryptic’s handy features matrix.

The question is, is a free-to-play model enough to get you interested in Champions Online?
